Breaking Free From Debt

Actor Rashami Desai’s sheer gumption has taken her from growing up in poverty to becoming one of India’s highest-paid television stars

Growing up, my family’s financial situation was pretty dire. Even at the age of just 13 or 14, I knew I had to do something, and I found work as a dancer. When I look back at those days, I feel extremely sad; I don’t remember really having a childhood.

“Nothing has ever been handed to me. I have had to work hard for everything. I have always told myself, ‘This too shall pass,’ but things don’t always work out the way you’d want them to.

“It took me a while to understand what was important for our family’s financial planning. I did a lot of pension and financial planning. I’ve realised that it was very important to know how to invest correctly, because that’s how money grows.

“Life is all about planning and attitude. It is the same even with work, it’s very easy to get demotivated with the competition around. Yet, I feel that the universe has been on my side.

“I finally have a lifestyle that is quite high maintenance due to my job, but I ensure that I save, invest, and also donate. That is very important to me. Now, I live securely with proper financial planning.”
