The colour gold holds importance in Indian culture, especially when it comes to festivities. The Festival Of Lights has Laxmi Puja as one of the main celebrations. Here, the gold we own, and money, is paid homage to, along with Goddess Laxmi who is the goddess of wealth. In other festivals of India, like Dussehra, gold plays an important part. On Dussehra, people give each other leaves from the Apta tree aka Bidi trees and it is also called ‘gold’; this denotes that people should imbibe the purity and shine of gold.
Speaking of gold, it is also one of the main colours in an Indian wedding. While it is more common in jewellery, ensembles in gold look just as dazzling and beautiful. With its glitz and elegance, the colour gold helps you stand out in a crowd. If you’re not sure how to incorporate gold into your bridal trousseau, here’s some inspiration from your favourite Bollywood divas to help you slay this wedding season.

Alia Bhatt's Bespoke Ring at the Met Gala Was From Malabar Gold & Diamond
Alia’s personal style is feminine yet not flowery. Powerful yet relatable. Stylish and extremely sophisticated. She’s also someone who has almost always turned to jewellery to accessorise her looks. Just take her Met look for instance. The actor wore an exaggerated basque waist ball gown, completely embellished in pearls, designed by designer Prabal Gurung. And though the outfit itself was breathtaking, her jewellery was having its own moment, especially the ring she wore on the index finger of her right hand.

The ring in question was from Malabar Gold & Diamonds, and was custom designed for her by fine jewellery designer Alice Cicolini. It boasts of a central diamond that is concentrically surrounded with several other smaller diamonds and finally a ring of pearls to complete the piece and tie the piece with the theme and to pay homage to the designer Karl Lagerfeld whose love for pearls is, at this point, a matter of public knowledge. The ring became the ultimate symbol of global style sensibilities and the finery of Indian craftsmanship, and was displayed at one of the biggest fashion events of the year.
After the phenomenal success of Malabar Gold & Diamond campaign #MakeWayForTheBride of 2021, having Alia Bhatt be front and centre of the 2023 campaign #ShowTheWay alongside modern-traditionalist Indian brides is befitting. Especially since the actor has been showing the way (and paving it) for the new-age Indian women.

Masaba Gupta’s Modern Wedding Outfit Is Equal Parts Kitschy and Fun
Masaba’s Wedding Outfit – The Bride (and Everyone Else) Wore House of Masaba
Masaba Gupta designed not only her own wedding outfit but that of her husband and their respective families, too. For herself, she chose a modern traditionalist lehenga in bright colours that are a mainstay in mithais, namely a barfi, stocked by traditional local halwais. The vintage-inspired look draws heavily from yesteryear Indian maximalist bridal looks that populated the ’80s and the ’90s. The lehenga was a kalidar number with panels of different hues of pink – a lighter pastel pink and a fuschia-neon shade that inched more toward the heritage Indian rani pink. The skirt features blown up paan (betel) leaf motifs on each kali that’s embroidered fully in gold. The border, lined with traditional kiran (gold trimmings) also features the signature House of Masaba motif, the palm, and other tropical designs in a recurring pattern.
The blouse is a simple bustier blouse made of green and pink embroidered raw silk with a halter-like neck. Masaba swapped the regular bridal looks featuring just one dupattas with two organza numbers in matching green and pink each and had them draped across each shoulder.
She Wore Her Mom’s Jewellery
Masaba finished her vintage look with the right heirloom accoutrements that belong to her mother, actor Neena Gupta. There are three necklaces of varying lengths that are layered to fall concentrically from her collar to her chest. The earrings are chandeliers in antique gold. She’s also wearing typical Indian hand jewellery called haath phool featuring a bouquet of pearl beads. Our favourite part of the look, however, was the chaand-sitara (moon and star) hair clips that subverted the typical maang tikka or matha patti. Is this going to spark a new hair accessories trend? We sure think so.
What do you think of Masaba’s candy-coloured kitschy wedding outfit?
